MÖTLEY CRÜE – Front and Centre

MÖTLEY CRÜE – front and centre, that’s the only way to see these heavy metal legends play after 30 years last night at the Entertainment Centre, Sydney.

The hard-living legends, Nikki Sixx (Bass guitar), Tommy Lee (Drums), Mick Mars (Lead guitar), and Vince Neil (vocals/guitar) may look weathered, but these guys aged between 49-60 years old know how to still rock with the best.

Live Music Photographers were not there for a professional role, but for strictly entertainment purposes.  The only way to really see and feel MÖTLEY CRÜE  play was to make my way up to the front and centre.  By the end of the first song, I was up there.

The next 1 1/2 hours I was guided by a wave of people head banging, jumping up and down with ‘Devil Horns’, pushed in the back, kicked in the legs, pinched by people trying to squeeze into a gap no bigger than a tuna can.  Not to mention having other peoples sweat being rubbed on my face and body, strangers arm pits in my mouth.  But hey, like one guy said, “are we here for fucking Cold Play?”

Everything from Tommy’s roller coaster drum set, Mick’s look of  ’death warmed up’, Nikki’s saliva spitting antics into the crowd and Vince’s “where’s all the fucking good looking women at” attitude, there was no better way to see these guys than up close and personal.

Sex, Drugs and rock’n roll, MÖTLEY CRÜE, what more can you say about these guys??

The Licks – Guilty of Rock n’ Roll

The Licks posted a video on YouTube early 2011, which contains a lot of photographs taken by Live Music Photographers.

The Licks recorded “Guilty of Rock n’ Roll” in a private Balmain studio in August 2010, which is the backing song to this YouTube post.

Live Music Photographers would like to thank The Licks for using their images in this music video.  Live Music Photographers look forward to more future encounters with these Rock n’ and Rollers of Sydney.

N.B: The images taken by Live Music Photographers, are actually marked by the old water mark of ‘Dean Wignell Photography’.

The Majestics

The Majestics entertained a full house in one of the largest Vietnamese restaurant in Cabramatta on Saturday night.

Now, Vietnamese music is not something you would typically find on the Live Music Photographers blog, but having a family member play in the band just made sense.  The Majestics is a four piece band which often play in clubs and restaurants in Sydney, predominately Cabramatta and Bankstown.

Live Music Photographers were asked to come along and help promote The Majestics at a local fundraiser, helping a local Buddhist monastery  raise money.  The Majestics supported local singers and well known American Vietnamese singers perform.

Live Music Photographers Shoot Nat Col and the Kings

Live Music Photographers opened their 2011 music season with an awesome line-up.

Nat Col and The Kings got the crowed totally warmed up and sweaty at the Annandale Hotel, Sydney, before the main event, Boom Crash Opera.

Once again Nat Col and The Kings put on a stella performance, giving it all they got. This is truly a must see band. Live Music Photographers has shot Nat Col and The Kings once before, and their Blues, Roots and Rock sound just keep sounding better and better every time.

Nathan Cavaleri (lead guitar/vocals), with his exceptional guitar playing, leads the band into an awesome twist of blues and rock. And lets not forget Col Hatchman (drummer), the drum solo that he smashes out, just leaves your jaw on the ground.

Nat Col and The Kings, display so much energy on stage and through their music, that the main event better be 100% to compete with this awesome Aussie blues/rock band.

Shooting the same band a number of times gives Live Music Photographers an opportunity to find something new to shoot.  Hope you enjoy the images of Nat Col and The Kings, and do yourself a favour and check this band out.  Scroll down to the bottom and see another surprise video of Nat Col and the Kings.

Live Music Photographers Shoot Go With Colours

Live Music Photographers shoot ‘Go With Colours’ last Saturday night at the Annandale Hotel, Sydney.

Go With Colours needed no warming up on Saturday night.  Being over 30 degrees helped, but why wouldn’t you be pumped when you’re opening for Nat Col & The Kings and Boom Crash Opera.

A five piece band from Sydney, they are basically a pub rock band with a splash of pop, with a bit of indie or funk thrown in.

Live Music Photographers had a chance to speak with the guys and they were pumped.  Even though Go With Colours have been together for five months, their individual experience is second to none.

The band consists of Alexander J (Singer/organ), Chunk B (Bass), Nevl F (Bass),  Matty T (guitar) and Tommy (drums).  A special thanks also goes out to Simon, as he filled on for one time only for Nevl.

The best thing for Live Music Photographers is that I get to shoot all new and up and coming bands.  It’s great to see them early, raw and rough around the edges.  But I guess that is exactly what pub rock is.

Checkout the images from Live Music Photographers and I hope to see Go With Colours again some time soon in a stinky summers afternoon rock hall.

Boom Crash Opera

Boom Crash Opera crashed the Annandale Hotel, Sydney on Saturday night.

Not even the 30 degree + temperatures on Saturday night could keep away eager fans to rock on with Boom Crash Opera.

Formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1985, Boom Crash Opera now consists of band members Peter Farnan (guitar/bass/keys/vocals) Dale Ryder (lead vocals), Peter ‘Maz’ Maslen (drums/vocals), Greg O’Connor (keyboards/guitar) and Ian Tilley (bass/vocals).

With their pop-rock style, Boom Crash Opera kept the jammed packed Annandale Hotel with their hands in the air. If you’ve wondered where they’ve been all these years, well keep your ears open in 2011 as they’re back on the road again. If you’re from the younger generation, say 25 and below, but love great Australian music, then check these legends out.

Live Music Photographers were honoured to be invited to shoot Boom Crash Opera. Checkout some of the images below.

Live Music Photographers Shoot L.U.S.T

L.U.S.T finished off with a bullet to the head at the Annandale Hotel, Sydney last Friday night.

This four piece Australian rock band from the inner west, Sydney, delivered exactly what the crowed demanded, loud, hard and fast, with a “fuck you” attitude.

L.U.S.T have toured with the likes of the Screaming Jets and Nashville Pussy (US).  In February 2010 L.U.S.T completed their Australian Tour with Ace Frehley (KISS) to launch their first debut single ‘First Tattoo’.

Having recorded their debut album, which was mixed by Ulrich Wild (White Stripes and Pantera), L.U.S.T, in the meantime is kicking arse at every show for their die hard legion of fans.

This Australian rock band is not going down with out a fight.  With their “get your hands dirty’ attitude, L.U.S.T will not wait to be discovered, as they are playing too hard and too fast for them not to be.

With bleeding eardrums (it was so worth it), Live Music Photographers shot this heavy sounding band.  Checkout the images below of L.U.S.T.

Live Music Photographers Shoot The Licks

The Licks tore the roof off the Annandale Hotel on Friday night.

Supporting the band L.U.S.T, The Licks really warmed up the crowed, REALLY!!!  Their music being described as  a raw energized mix of blues, glam and punk rock.  However, described by the drummer, Steve, “We sound like a dirty pub band”.

Now, you know your gonna be in for treat with a dirty pub band.  With a quote taken from The Licks myspace, The Licks tear apart their music with a thundering bass, grooving drums, squealing guitar and explosive vocals, which send a message in blood.

As one satisfied audience member said after the show, “That was fucking worth the money”.  If you want hard, heavy, and bleeding ear drums, then The Licks are the band for you.

Enjoy the following images from Live Music Photographers, and hope to see you at the next show.  I know Live Music Photographers will be back.

Live Music Photographers Shoot The Kandy Apples Final Show

Live Music Photographers shoot the final show of The Kandy Apples.

An Indie/rock band from Sydney, The Kandy Apples debuted in 2007, where shortly after they released their first EP, in which their first single ‘Stefs Song’ was launched.  This led the Kandy Apples to having a sold out show in Sydney in 2008.

The sweet sound of The Kandy Apples include the band members Damian Kukulj (Drums/percussion), Meaghan Blake (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Steve Farrell, (Lead Guitar) and Casey (Bass/Backing Vocals).

The journey for the Kandy Apples has just been all uphill for them, where along their journey they’ve had the opportunity to rub shoulders with people who have helped them become who they are today.  Live Music Photographers were privileged to be apart of their success.  Unfortunately it was the final show and not the beginning of the Kandy Apples that Live Music Photographers got to shoot.  Who knows, when the time is right, the Kandy shop will re-open.

As a big supporter of local and Australian music, Live Music Photographers pays tribute to this awesome Australian band.  These pictures are for The Kandy Apples, the fans and supporters of Australian music.

Metallica – How I met these Legends

Metallica is one of the world’s most successful heavy metal bands. Metallica has sold over 100 million records worldwide including their latest album, ‘Death Magnetic’.

Formed in 1981, Metallica caught my attention when the film clip ‘One’ was first viewed on Rage in 1989, when I was 11.  Ever since then I was caught in the Metallica web.

21 years later I have finally seen my first Metallica concert.  I know, how can I be such a fan, when I have not even seen them before now???  But my wait, has been the best 12 year wait ever.

Not only did I see an awesome concert in Sydney, but I met and hung out with Metallica’s photographer Ross Halfin, who has shot Metallica for the past 25 years. And guess what,I even bumped shoulders with Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo.

Thanks to Tali Udovich from Blender Gallery, Paddington, Sydney, who held ‘The Ultimate Metallica’ photography exhibition by Ross Halfin, I was able to meet Ross, Kirk and Rob.

As a live music photographer, who shoots rock and heavy metal, I can only look up to a photographer god such as Ross Halfin. After a few simple words of inspiration from Ross, (which are close to me), I am inspired to keep shooting and searching for the next ‘Metallica’ that will give me the opportunity to shoot their career into rock spotlight.

Live Music Photographers Shoot Robert Ephraums

All eyes were on Robert Ephraums on Sunday night at the Lansdowne Hotel, Sydney and Live Music Photographers where there to shoot him.

This young singer/songwriter/guirtarist, opened the set at the Lansdowne Hotel with nothing but pure love from the audience.

Robert has quite a following for only been on the Sydney scene for 18 months. Picking up the guitar at a friends party in year 10, its only been up for Robert Ephraums.

With a plan to record his first EP in January 2011, during his UNI break, he draws is inspiration from the late Jesse Younan. After watching Meza in the audience when younger, he is now opening for them.

Robert’s smooth sound consists of alternate folk with a hint of blues.  Keep an ear to the ground for this guy, as you will start to hear his name around the Sydney music scene.

Checkout the images from the Live Music Photographers, of Robert Ephraums.

Live Music Photographers Shoot Meza

FINALLY!!!!!!  Live Music Photographers shoot Meza.

If the lead singer (the first image below) looks familiar, than you will remeber him from the shoot that Live Music Photographers did a few weeks ago at the Bridge Hotel.

Thats right, Emad Younan.  Well Live Music Photographers finally caught his band ‘Meza’ playing at the Newtown RSL, Sydney on Friday night.

Meza is a 3-piece band from Sydney, who have been playing together for a number of years.  It’s their unique brand of guitar-driven melodic rock, blended with a distinct eastern flavour, which keeps their fans wanting more.

Following two great gigs on Friday night, Meza kept the crowds hungry for more home grown Aussie rock.  With Emad Younan on lead vocals and guitar, Phil Nakad on bass, and drummer Andy Jessimer (normally Ben Jessimer), they lived up to their expectations on being an intense live performance.

You can check out Meza along with Crowd to the Shore (Andy Jessimer’s band), at the Landsdown Hotel, Broadway on Sunday, 24 October  · 6:00pm – 10:30pm.
Check out the images from the Newtown RSL from the Live Music Photographers.

EP Launch – Helmut & Mai-Anh

Ep Launch at Mars Hill Parramatta Cafe.

Helmut and Mai-Anh have been working on their EP Launch for a long eight months.  Helmut’s Ep ‘Never Noticed’ and Mai-Anh’s EP ‘Arthur Street’ finally launched at Mars Hill Parramatta Cafe on Saturday night.

With a great reception for them both, they entertained friends, family and locals.  Helmut and Mai-Anh are two solo artists who support one another in their individual genres.  Mai-Anh’s pop/soul influenced piano and vocals complement Helmut’s rock/metal/pop guitar to create a unique sound.

Both recorded their EP’s at Mars Hill’s very own Mental Space Studios.  The two have been gigging around Sydney, performing their own music and lyrics to anyone who will listen, in a lead up to this memorable night.

With the determination and passion showen in their performance, including their hard work for the EP Launch, it is only up for this pair.  These are two names to keep an ear  to the ground around the Sydney music venues.

Live Music Photographers were personally requested by Helmut to photograph their EP Launch, and of course, we accepted.  After several months shooting at Mars Hill Parramatta Cafe, the risk of producing the same images is high.  This is where a true artist/photographer has to look completely out of the square, look for new angles, something new for the viewer.

For this shoot, Live Music Photographers wanted to get closer to the performers than ever before.  Even though Mars Hill Parramatta Cafe is a small venue anyway, we got on stage and got amongst the performance.  In doing so Live Music Photographers noticed so many other interesting angles, including one of a reflection of Helmut on his black electric guitar.  Hope you enjoy these images as mush as Live Music Photographers did taking them.

Mars Hill Parramatta Cafe – Local Performers Steph & Craig

Mars Hill Parramatta Cafe hosted Steph & Craig last Saturday night.

With a rockish/punkish/paramore style, Steph & Craig draw their inspiration from general life experiences.

Steph has been singing since she was young and Craig a guitarist/singer and DJ.  You would not know that this couple have only been performing together for a few months.

Keep an eye out for this duo, and help support their begginings in the Australian music arena. Live Music Photographers got to shoot Steph & Craig at the Mars Hill Parramatta Cafe. Enjoy!!!

Storm in a Teacup

With wild winds at the south coast and floods in Victoria on the weekend, Storm in a Teacup certainly unleashed at the Mars Hill Cafe, Parramatta on Saturday night.

Live Music Photographers were there to capture an awesome line-up of great local talent.

Storm in a Teacup have been together for two years.  Matt (guitar/vocals), Ash (cajon/guitar) and Camilla (violin/vocals), make up the Gypsy Folk Rock Band, Storm in a Teacup.

All three members met when studying bachelor of music and performance at the Wesley College in Drummoyne.

Storm in a Teacup play at the regular music venues in the inner west, such as the Vanguard in Newtown, Annandale Hotel, Cat and Fiddle Hotel and the Roxbury.

This charismatic band,  is a must see.  From the smooth elegance of the violin to the rhythmic sound of the cajon, the unique sound of Storm in a Teacup will certainly bring a calmness over you.

Crowd to the Shore – A Crowd Pleaser for Sure.

Crowd to the Shore certainly warmed up the crowd at Mars Hill Cafe on Friday night.

Andy Jessimer, singer/songwriter and guitarist from Crowd to the Shore has been gigging for the past 3 years.  Playing mainly in the inner west venues such as the Annandale Hotel and the Roxbury Hotel, Andy made another appearance at the Mars Hill Cafe.

Being no stranger to Mars Hill Cafe, Andy has much support here in the west.  Andy draws his inspiration from the likes of Paul Kelly, Jeff Buckley, The Kooks, Queen, Karnivool, Jesse Younan, Meza, The Tea Party, and Phil Collins.

Van Diemen’s Land Creates a Blues Band

Ok, well Van Diemen’s Land didn’t really create a blues band, but The Vandemonians really did create a night to remember at the Mars Hill Cafe.

‘Vandemonians’, was word created by the police on Van Diemen’s Land, for the convicts of Australian settlers.  Meeting one-another at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, The Vandemonians have been performing for four years. The Vandemonians create their inspirtaion from a version of old delta blues and English 60′s blues.

The Vandemonians fluctuate between two to six band members.  When they played at Mars Hill Cafe, we were honoured with all six band members. Matt McGuigan (guitar, vox), Eleanor Witt (guitar, vox), Zane Banks (guitar), Jy-Perry Banks (bass), Louis Klaassen (sax, organ), and Gary Goldstein (drums).

If you didn’t get to catch up with The Vandemonians here in Parramatta, keep an eye out for them at other music venues in the pubs and clubs around the inner west and city venues. A band certainly not to be missed.

Ragtime Jazz – Bringing Back Southern Soul.

Ragtime jazz has hit Mars Hill Cafe, Parramatta, BIG TIME.

Peaking its popularity between 1897 to 1918, Ragtime jazz is signified by its main trait, being a syncopated rhythm.  Meaning displaced beats or accents in (music or a rhythm) so that strong beats become weak and vice versa.

Ragtime jazz began its popularity as dance music in the red-light districts in such places like New Orleans.  An iconic figure of ragtime jazz is composer Scott Joplin, where in 1899 published the ‘Maple Leaf Rag‘.

Almost forgotten, ragtime jazz has made a come back, right here in Parramatta.  The Original Rusty Spring Syncopators gave the audience at the Mars Hill Cafe, a taste of what it was like to be in the southern states of America in the late 1800′s.

Supporting a simple more tailored look, with worn out old work boots, J.B Lafimer (guitar), Reuben Holf (wash tub bass), and Sam Henning (washboard), looked like they just stepped out of the corn fields and stepped into a local dance shed to entertain the locals.

In fact that is what they did.  The Original Rusty Spring Syncopators put on a show for the first time in Parramatta, in front of friends and local supporters.  If you are ever in the city, watch out for these three guys busking along King Street, Sydney.

CelloKate

CelloKate was the second performance for Live Music Photographers, at the Mars Hill Cafe.

Being classically trained as a cellist, CelloKate, in 2007 travelled to Amsterdam where she met Martijn Hadders at a singer/songwriters collective called The Practicles.

In 2009 Martijn Hadders made his way to Australia, where both CelloKate and Martijn performed their way from Western Australia to Sydney.

Kate Adams AKA CelloKate, finds it hard to talk about music and once said in an interview, “Talking about music is like dancing to architecture” (Unknown source).

As CelloKate, (Classically trained cellist, who loves to jam) said, “I just love to play”.

Live Music Photographers captured this talented young lady, CelloKate and her partner Martijn Hadders performing their stylistic sound of cello, classical guitar and voice.  All images taken from Live Music Photographers at the Mars Hill Cafe, Parramatta.
